Empecemos por hacer un ejercicio pr\u00e1ctico. Cierra los ojos e imag\u00ednate una oveja. \u00bfDe qu\u00e9 color la ves? Quiz\u00e1s por el t\u00edtulo de este post, tu imaginario se ha vuelto creativo y ha aparecido en tu mente de color negro, pero lo m\u00e1s normal es que la te imagines blanca, ya que es el color t\u00edpico de las ovejas. La pregunta es si este es su color m\u00e0s natural o hemos tenido algo que ver en ello. Pues bien, al igual que ocurre con las frutas y hortalizas, las razas de oveja que hoy d\u00eda conocemos, no son exactamente fruto de la evoluci\u00f3n natural de las especies sino resultado de siglos de intervenci\u00f3n humana para lograr una serie de caracter\u00edsticas, dando como resultado dos procesos biol\u00f3gicos paralelos<\/strong>, por un lado una mayor biodiversidad gracias a los procesos de selecci\u00f3n y cruces entre razas inducidos por el hombre, y por otro ejerciendo una presi\u00f3n hacia aquellas razas \u00abmenos interesantes\u00bb para usos textiles y alimentarios, llev\u00e1ndolas al borde de su extinci\u00f3n o haci\u00e9ndo desaparecer infinidad de razas aut\u00f3ctonas.<\/p>\n

Let’s start by making a practical exercise. Close your eyes and imagine a sheep. What color you see? Perhaps under the influence of the title of this post, your imagination has become creative and has appeared in your mind in black color, but the most common is that you imagine it in white, as it is the typical color of the sheep. The question is whether this is the more natural color or have we had something to do with it. Well, as is the case with fruits and vegetables, the sheep breeds we know today are not the result of the natural evolution of species but the result of centuries of human intervention to achieve a number of features<\/strong>, resulting in two parallel biological processes. One which has resulted in a greater biodiversity through the human-induced processes of selection and cross-breeding, and other exerting a great pressure on those \u00abless interesting\u00bb breeds for textiles and food uses, leading them to the brink of extinction or making them disappear map.<\/span><\/p>\n

El gen recesivo<\/h3>\n

Una de las razones por las que se ha influido en las posibilidades reproductivas de las ovejas negras, es que hist\u00f3ricamente se han preferido las fibras claras frente a las oscuras, por el mero hecho de que resultan mas f\u00e1ciles de te\u00f1ir. Por suerte, la dificultad t\u00e9cnica que entra\u00f1a deshacerse del gen responsable de esta caracter\u00edstica, ha permitido que sobreviva frente al af\u00e1n de exterminar los colores naturales de las fibras, algo muy similar a lo que ha ocurrido con el algod\u00f3n. Es por ello que las ovejas que tenemos en el imaginario colectivo son siempre blancas, salvo la tradicional oveja negra que rara vez nace ya que es portadora del llamado gen recesivo,<\/strong> el cual es responsable de que tengan menos probabilidades reproductivas a consecuencia de siglos de selecci\u00f3n inducida por el hombre a favor de las blancas. Y no s\u00f3lo por motivos comerciales sino por cuestiones religiosas, ya que en ciertas sociedades llegaron a ser consideradas animales diab\u00f3licos. As\u00ed, cuando nace una oveja negra a partir de la reproducci\u00f3n entre blancas, hemos de pensar en un pasado no tan remoto en el que los reba\u00f1os no eran tan blancos como hoy d\u00eda los conocemos.<\/p>\n

The recesive gen<\/span><\/h3>\n

As white fibers have been preferred historically (dark colors are more difficult to dye), humans have influenced in the reproductive potential of the black sheep, although the technical difficulty of getting rid of the gene responsible of the colour, has allowed survive along the time this particular feature. That\u00b4s why the sheep we have in the collective imagination are white, except for the traditional black sheep, which rarely born as a consecuence of the called recessive gene<\/strong>, which is the responsible of the less reproductive probabilities of the black sheep, result of centuries of man-induced selection, not only for commercial reasons but for religious ones, insofar that in certain societies the black sheep were considered a kind of evil animals. So when a black sheep comes from breeding between white ones, we may think on a remote past in which herds were not as white as we know them today.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00bfUn reba\u00f1o de ovejas negras?<\/h3>\n

Desde que nos contact\u00f3 la Fundaci\u00f3n Global Nature ofreci\u00e9ndonos la posibilidad de que di\u00e9ramos vida a la lana de un reba\u00f1o de ovejas negras y nos hemos interesado a\u00fan m\u00e1s si cabre por este fen\u00f3meno, no s\u00f3lo por su inter\u00e9s ecol\u00f3gico en el que seguiremos profundizando, sino porque representa una opci\u00f3n textil a tener muy en cuenta, ya que la mezcla de fibras blancas y negras proporciona un interesante abanico de colores naturales<\/strong> como ocurre con nuestras lanas del de le\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong>. Y aunque desconocemos la cifra exacta, en la pen\u00ednsula parace haber m\u00e1s de veinte reba\u00f1os de ovejas negras. Toca ahora investigar si todos ellos corresponden a variedades auct\u00f3ctonas, si algunos de ellos han sido introducidas o si se ha llevado a cabo el proceso de selecci\u00f3n a la inversa en calidad de \u00abdiscriminaci\u00f3n positiva\u00bb. \u00a1Hasta la pr\u00f3xima entrega de OVEJAS NEGRAS!<\/p>\n

A flock of black sheep?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Recently, we were contacted by the Global Nature Foundation who offered us the possibility to give life to the wool of a flock of black sheep, and since then we’ve especially interested in this phenomenon, not only for it\u00b4s ecological interest but because represents a textile option to be taken into account in the extent that the mixture of black and white fibers provides an interesting range of natural colors<\/strong>. And although we do not know the exact number, it might exist over twenty herds of black sheep in Spain. It is now time to investigate if these herds correspond to local varieties, if they have been introduced or they have been achieved trought the selection process in reverse direction.
