De vuelta de la Semana Cultural de la Lana

Ya estamos de vuelta de la Semana Cultural de la Lana de Guadalaviar, una de las localidades más trashumantes de España y contaros acerca de este evento cien por cien lanero en el que hemos tenido el placer compartir con personas entrañables y sensibles hacia el mundo de la lana, aunque se de aquí la paradoja de que les resulte una fibra tan desconocida, siendo una materia prima tan arraigada en su historia y tradiciones. Y quizás sea esto un reflejo de que no era costumbre transformar la lana de forma local y, a menudo, ni siquiera de forma regional o nacional ya que, tras la esquila, gran parte ella se dirigía hacia otros territorios más interesados en incorporar -para variar- la mayor parte de su valor añadido. He aquí una de las grandes motivaciones de nuestro trabajo y el hecho nos llevó hace ya algunos años a recuperar lana de rebaños locales, y la razón que nos mueve a formar para que la gente se anime a crear artículos textiles con esa materia prima de increíble potencial.

We’re already back from the Cultural Wool Week in Guadalaviar, one of the most nomadic villages here in Spain. So now we can talk you about our experience in this wool event in which we have had the pleasure to share our knowledges with kids and adults, all of them very sensitive to the world of wool; although here we find the paradox that the wool is a commodity clearly rooted in its history and traditions and, at the same time, a so unknown fiber for them. And perhaps this is a reflection (as in many other towns with wool tradition) that it was not common transform the wool locally, not even at a regional or national level. So after shearing, much of this beautiful animal fiber was heading in to north in order to be processed, incorporating there the most part of their value added. Flanders is a good example! So this is one of the main motivations of our work and the fact that led us, some years ago, to start shearing, washing, carding, dyeing and spinning the wool from our local herds, and the reason that drives us to train people in order to encourage them to create textiles with this unique natural fiber, which market price today in Spain is between 80 cents and one euro and a half.

 

 

 

 

Talleres para peques

La Semana Cultural de la Lana ha incluído talleres matinales dirigidos a los más jóvenes, brindándonos la oportunidad de convivir con un maravilloso grupo de peques (Vega, Miguel, Andrea, Pablo, Íker, Ona, Maia, Celia…) y no tan peques (Elia, Alba, Nadia, Soraya, Daniel, Alejandro, Jorge, Mark, Ana…), a lo largo de una semana repleta de emociones que recordaremos con gran cariño! Tanto por la creatividad y destrezas lanares que han demostrado (manipulando la lana con una soltura que ya muchos quisiéramos), como por su simpatía, espíritu abierto, buena acogida, actitud colaborativa y afecto! Teníais que ver hilar a niños de 5-7 años con el método pedagógico de Mundo Lanar, en el que convertimos el acto de hilar en un sencillo y divertido juego colaborativo basado en la compenetración entre dos personas.

Workshops for kids

The Cultural Wool Week included morning workshops for kids, which has given us the opportunity to share with a wonderful group of kids (Vega, Miguel, Andrea, Paul, Iker, Noa, Maia Celia …) and teens (Elia Alba, Nadia, Soraya, Daniel, Alexander, Gorge, Mark, Ana …), all along a week full of emotions that we will always remember fondly! As much for their creativity and skills that they have demonstrated (manipulating the wool with an enviable ease), as for their sympathy, openness, good reception, collaborative attitude and affection! You should have seen children of 5 five years old, spinning by hand with our teaching method in which we make this act a fun collaborative game based on the complicity and mutual understanding between two people regardless of age.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Talleres para adultos

Y qué decir de los mayores (Paqui, Juani, Isabel, María Trashumante, María de Casa María, Inma, Ana, Ana María, Guadalupe, Begoña, Clara, Humi…), quienes se han mostrado interesadas por todos y cada uno de los pasos del proceso de la lana y sin cuya predisposición, ganas e iniciativa, esta experiencia carecería de sentido. Aprovechamos la ocasión para daros nuestra enhorabuena por el trabajo realizado y que sepáis que valoramos enormemente vuestro empeño en que las nuevas generaciones se interesen por este apasionante tema.

And what to say about the older (Paquita, Juani, Isabel, Maria Trashumante, Maria from Casa Maria, Inma, Ana, Ana Maria, Guadalupe, Begoña, Clara, Humi…), who have expressed a great interest in the process of the wool, showing a great enthusiasm and initiative on the issue. We take this opportunity to give our congratulations for the work done and to tell you that we do appreciate your interest in the new generations for them to get involved in the wool, with all that this implies. Sincerely, without your this experience would be meaningless.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jornada Lanar

Y como colofón de una semana repleta de talleres, el sábado tuvimos el placer de compartir, entre otros aderezos, nuestra exposición al aire libre sobre el Proceso de la Lana, así como las demostraciones de hilado tradicional y tintes naturales y la exposición de fotografía trashumante cedida por la Asociación Naturaleza y Trashumancia, por cortesía de Jesús Garzón, una de las personas que más lucha en nuestro país por la defensa y puesta en valor de la Trashumancia y el Territorio y cuyo trabajo os iremos dando a conocer. Y felicidades a Clara de la Posada de Ana (donde muy pronto estaremos dando talleres) por ese Kit de Huso que te tocó en la rifa!

Wool Day

As the culmination of complete week of workshops, on Saturday we had the pleasure of sharing our outdoor exhibit about the Process of Wool, our demonstrations on traditional spinning and natural dyes, as well as the exposure of photography about nomadic culture, courtesy of the Transhumance and Nature Association, courtesy of Jesus Garzon, one of the most involved persons in the struggle to defend and value of transhumance and territories, whose work will reveal soon. And congratulations to Clara (from La Posada de Ana, where we will soon be giving workshops) by the kit (to learn how to spin with spindle) that she gained at the raffle!

To to Chema and Marta, from that mythical meeting point called Tele-Club, for their logistic support; to María and José María from Casa María for making us feel like at home; to Toribio and his family of the El Mirador, a nice restaurant in the middle of the mountains, for their culinary attentions; to Martina from Martina House, for those breakfast with fresh bread and tomatoes direct from the garden; to María and Andrés, two icons of the nomadic culture here in Spain, who have welcomed us into their home and granted us an interview; to Guadalupe who also granted us an interesting interview about nomadic culture; to all the participants in the workshops without whom this marvelous experience would not have been possible; to Humi, responsible of the Museum of Transhumance and traveling companion in this beautiful experience; and of course, to the City of Guadalaviar for their trust on us to carry out this cultural event and give its people the opportunity to approach the world of wool by the training pathway, since very often the wool activities tend more to the celebration than to deep into the knowledge and skills necessary to transform wool into textile, by means of learning of carding, spinning, weaving, felting and dyeing!
